Accessibility Overhaul for a National Healthcare Portal
Key outcomes
The Challenge
A national healthcare information portal serving millions of citizens was facing legal pressure over accessibility compliance. An audit by the Government Digital Service had identified over 200 WCAG 2.1 AA violations across the platform, putting the organisation at risk of enforcement action.
The development team had no prior accessibility testing expertise, and the portal's complex React-based component library meant that fixing individual violations without breaking others required careful co-ordination.
The Solution
TestDel deployed a dedicated accessibility testing team comprising manual testers using assistive technologies (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) and automated tooling specialists. We created a comprehensive remediation roadmap prioritised by severity and user impact.
We worked directly with the client's developers in two-week sprints, providing detailed remediation guidance for each violation and retesting fixes within the same sprint. We also delivered accessibility training workshops for the internal development team to embed accessibility into their development workflow going forward.
